What Is PCD Pharma Franchise? A Complete Beginner's Guide

PCD pharma franchise lets you sell a company’s branded medicines in your own area with monopoly rights and low investment. Here is how the model works, what it costs and how to get started.

What does PCD mean?

PCD stands for Propaganda Cum Distribution. In a PCD pharma franchise, a pharma company gives you the right to promote (propaganda) and sell (distribution) its branded medicines in a defined area — usually a district or a group of districts. You buy stock from the company, promote it to doctors and chemists in your territory, and keep the margin.

It is one of the most popular ways to start a pharma business in India because you do not need your own manufacturing plant, your own brand or a large sales team.

How the PCD model works — step by step

  1. You choose a company whose product range suits the doctors in your area (general, derma, gynae, pediatric, cardiac-diabetic and so on).
  2. You sign a franchise agreement that fixes your territory, monopoly rights, minimum order and price list (PTS / PTR).
  3. You place the first order — typically a mix of the company’s fast-moving products.
  4. The company supports you with visual aids, product cards, samples, MR bags and other promotional inputs.
  5. You promote and supply doctors, chemists and stockists in your area, and reorder as stock moves.

How much investment is needed?

Investment depends on the company and the range, but many PCD companies accept a first order in the range of ₹25,000 to ₹1,00,000. On top of stock, keep a budget for:

  • Drug licence and GST registration
  • A small storage space that meets licence norms (including a refrigerator if you stock cold-chain items)
  • Local travel for doctor visits and delivery
  • Working capital for credit given to chemists

What margins can you expect?

You buy at the PTS (Price to Stockist) and sell to chemists at the PTR (Price to Retailer). On many franchise price lists the gap between your purchase price and the MRP is large, because the company expects you to build demand. Use our PTR / PTS calculator to check the real margin on any product before you sign.

What is monopoly right?

Monopoly means the company will not appoint another franchise partner for the same range in your territory. It protects your investment in doctor relationships. Always get the monopoly area, the product list it covers and the minimum yearly purchase written into the agreement — read our guide on monopoly rights.

Documents you need

  • Wholesale drug licence (Form 20B / 21B) from your State Drug Control department
  • GST registration
  • PAN, address proof and bank account in the business name

Our detailed checklist is in Drug Licence & GST: Documents Every Pharma Distributor Needs.

Is PCD pharma franchise right for you?

It suits medical representatives who want to start their own business, existing distributors adding a new range, and chemists expanding into distribution. It rewards people who already know local doctors and are ready to promote consistently.
