What are PTR and PTS in pharma?

PTR (Price to Retailer) is the price at which a chemist or retailer buys a medicine from the stockist. PTS (Price to Stockist) is the price at which the stockist or distributor buys it from the pharma company. MRP is the maximum retail price printed on the pack, inclusive of GST, which the patient pays.

The gap between each level is that level's trade margin. In the PCD pharma franchise business the most common structure for non-scheduled products is a 20% retailer margin and a 10% stockist margin.

PTR and PTS formula

StepFormula (trade practice)Example — MRP ₹100, GST 5%
MRP excluding GSTMRP ÷ (1 + GST%)100 ÷ 1.05 = ₹95.24
PTRMRP ex-GST × (1 − retailer margin)95.24 × 0.80 = ₹76.19
PTSPTR × (1 − stockist margin)76.19 × 0.90 = ₹68.57

DPCO method for scheduled drugs

For scheduled formulations under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, the retail price is worked out by adding a 16% margin to the retailer on PTR and an 8% margin to the stockist on PTS. That is a markup on cost, so PTR = MRP ex-GST ÷ 1.16 and PTS = PTR ÷ 1.08. Choose “% markup on cost” above to use this method. Always check the ceiling price notified by NPPA for scheduled drugs.

Why the calculation matters for a franchise

  • It tells a distributor exactly how much margin they keep on every strip.
  • It lets a company check that its PTS still covers manufacturing cost, promotion and profit.
  • It avoids disputes by fixing the PTR / PTS on the rate list before appointment.
FAQ

PTR / PTS — FAQs

Remove GST from MRP (MRP ÷ 1.05 for 5% GST), then deduct the retailer margin. With a 20% margin: PTR = MRP ex-GST × 0.80. For MRP ₹100 at 5% GST, PTR is ₹76.19.
PTS = PTR × (1 − stockist margin). With a 10% stockist margin, PTS = PTR × 0.90. For a PTR of ₹76.19, PTS is ₹68.57.
No. PTR and PTS are normally quoted excluding GST. GST at the applicable rate is added on the invoice at each level. This calculator shows both values.
For non-scheduled medicines, 20% for retailers and 10% for stockists is common practice. For scheduled drugs under DPCO 2013 the allowed margins are 16% for retailers and 8% for stockists.
Yes. Switch to “PTS → PTR & MRP”, enter your PTS, GST rate and margins, and the calculator works back to the PTR and MRP.
